Stereoview featuring a group of 8 African Americans posed with a white man on some type of wooden deck (possibly aboard a ship), with 3 other white men looking upon the group from a higher platform. Verso bears paper label including series name: "Hughes' Instantaneous Views Alabama River;" Image number: "No. 14;" full title; and publisher's information.

Wetumpka Penitentiary was the first state prison established in Alabama. Construction on the prison was completed in 1841, and the first prisoner was confined there in 1842.
